Grant of Probate is a formal document issued by the court which formally validates the Will and gives the Executor legal authority to deal with the deceased’s assets and debts and distribute the estate in accordance with the terms of the Will.

Letters of Administration (needed when there is no will) are issued instead to the next of kin of an individual who dies without a Will and gives the administrator legal authority to deal with the deceased’s assets and debts and distribute the estate in accordance with the intestacy rules.
